I can't imagine that I didn't just witness the most arogant, self-serving, egotistical act of political theatre I've ever seen. The only thing more disturbing than the spectacle itself is how sure I am that he himself believes it. During the primaries, one of my chief complaints about John McCain was that I thought he believed his own press clippings a little too much. Mr. McCain, My friends, I'm sorry. I had no idea. None of us did. This speech was so evil, so despicable, so towering in its moral decay that the only response that can do justice to the original will be to respond to it word for word. So respond to it I shall, just as soon as I can stomach it.
During the whole thing, the thought I had most often was; German, shouldn't all of this be in German? Isn't this the guy who is so embarassed when Americans travel to Europe and all they can say is merci beaucoup? He didn't even say that! Shouldn't all these Europeans be offended?
How great would it have been if the ghost of the Gipper had risen from that gate and charged Obama thundering "Mr. McCain, open up on this man already! Mr. McCain, tear down this fraud!" Now that would have been transcendent.
