Background: A car approaches a convoy of military vehicles moving through Afghanistan. Said convoy was being guarded by Canadian troops. After many warnings to move away from the convoy, the car failed to do so. Finally, the Canadians opened fire on the car. Two young children were killed.
You know, there actually is an indisputable truth to be found here. If you are told to move away from a convoy, are given more than enough time to do so, and then fail to do so, what happens next is *your* fault. I'm sorry, but there it is. This is so because we know what happens when events often play out in this way. A soldier refuses to fire on an apparently harmless car after warning it away, said car moves towards the convoy, boom. This soldier was obligated to do what he did in order to protect not only the convoy, but his fellow soldiers as well. That this happened was a tragedy as it always is. But this tragedy was avoidable. In a sane world, the father would be responsible and not the gunner. But sometimes the media has another story they wish to tell.
